Microsuction Earwax Removal — safe, effective and clinician-led
Microsuction is the gold-standard, minimally invasive method for removing earwax. ARC Medicals offers clinic and on-site microsuction performed by trained clinicians using a microscope and gentle suction — fast relief, clear results and practical aftercare advice.
What is microsuction?
Microsuction is a gentle earwax removal technique using a medical microscope and a low-pressure suction probe. It is quick, precise and usually more comfortable and safer than syringe irrigation. Unlike irrigation, microsuction does not flush the ear with water and can be used when water-based techniques are unsuitable.
Who is it for?
- People with bothersome earwax causing hearing reduction, fullness, irritation or tinnitus.
- Workers in safety-critical roles (drivers, plant operators) who need rapid restoration of hearing.
- Employees who have previously had failed irrigation or who have ear conditions that make water unsafe.
- Patients with hearing aids who require wax removal for device function.
Where we provide it
- Clinic-based microsuction — in our purpose-equipped clinical rooms with microscope lighting.
- On-site mobile clinics — for groups, workplaces or remote sites (subject to suitability and acoustic/privacy requirements).
- One-off appointments and programme bookings for workplace cohorts.
The process — what to expect
- Pre-assessment — clinician takes a brief history: symptoms, hearing aids, previous ear problems, recent discharge, surgeries, or ear pain. Consent is confirmed.
- Otoscopic exam — a visual check of the outer ear and ear canal using a microscope or otoscope.
- Microsuction procedure — under direct vision with a microscope, the clinician uses a fine suction probe to remove wax. The procedure typically takes 5–20 minutes per ear depending on wax.
- Post-procedure check — re-examination to confirm canal clearance and advise on hearing improvement. Written aftercare and prevention advice provided.
- Referral if needed — if there are signs of infection, perforation, or other pathology, we will advise GP/ENT referral.
Benefits of microsuction
- Precise and controlled under direct vision.
- Typically quicker and more comfortable than irrigation.
- Safe for people who cannot have water in their ear (e.g., perforated eardrum, grommets).
- Suitable for hearing-aid users and safety-critical workers who need rapid turnaround.
Contraindications & precautions
Microsuction may not be appropriate if the patient has:
- Acute severe ear pain or active ear discharge (possible infection) — may require clinical review first.
- Uncontrolled bleeding disorders (discuss with clinician).
- Recent ear surgery — clinician will assess on a case-by-case basis.
- Extreme anxiety or inability to remain still — discuss sedation or alternative arrangements.
If you or your employee experiences dizziness, severe pain, or bleeding during a procedure we will stop and refer for medical review.
Safety, training & equipment
- Procedures are performed by clinicians trained in ear microsuction and ear anatomy.
- We use medical-grade microscopes, single-use/sanitised suction tips and clinical infection-control protocols.
- We follow best-practice guidance and escalate to ENT when indicated.
Pricing & employer programmes
- Clinic single appointment — fixed price per ear/session (contact for current rates).
- On-site group clinics — discounted per-person pricing for workplace cohorts; travel and set-up charges may apply.
- Workplace packages — periodic clinics for hearing-aid users, drivers and safety-critical teams.
Contact us for a tailored quote based on numbers, location and clinical requirements. We can supply invoicing, consent forms and clinic scheduling to fit shift patterns.
Aftercare & prevention advice
- You may notice immediate improvement in hearing; occasionally hearing returns gradually.
- Avoid inserting cotton buds or unapproved objects into the ear.
- If prone to wax build-up, use clinician-recommended ear drops or follow a prevention plan.
- Seek prompt review if you experience pain, persistent dizziness, ear discharge or worsening hearing.
When we will refer on
We will advise GP or ENT referral if we find:
- Ear infection requiring treatment.
- Perforated eardrum or grommet issues.
- Recurrent or complicated wax disease requiring specialist input.
We’ll provide a clear, clinician-written letter to support onward care.
FAQs
Q — Is microsuction painful?
A — Most patients find microsuction comfortable. There may be mild tickling or temporary dizziness in a few cases. Clinicians work slowly and stop if there’s discomfort.
Q — How long does it take?
A — Typically 5–20 minutes per ear depending on wax amount and canal anatomy.
Q — Can it be done if I have a perforated eardrum?
A — Often yes — microsuction can be safer than irrigation in the presence of perforation, but the clinician will assess and proceed with caution or recommend referral.
Q — Can you do it for my staff at work?
A — Yes — we offer on-site clinics for employers (subject to risk assessment and appropriate space/privacy). Contact us to arrange a site visit and programme.
Q — Is it suitable for children?
A — Microsuction can be offered to older children who can remain still and cooperate. For very young children, specialist paediatric services may be recommended.
Q — Do I need a GP referral?
A — Not usually — patients can self-refer or be employer-referred. We will advise and coordinate with a patient’s GP if needed.
Clinical & data governance
We operate under clear clinical governance and data protection policies. Clinical records are maintained securely, and we only share information with consent or where required for patient safety.
